The pocket calculator to gorillas lacks precision

To preserve, it is necessary to be able to count. Considered as threatened, the gorilla of the Western plains (1) has just seen his population doubling in the single press release The society of conservation of wild fauna (TOILETS) indeed counted 125 000 gorillas of the Western plains in the north of the democratic Republic of Congo. Until now, the protectors of nature and the officials considered that there remained only a little more than fifty thousand there, by leaning on an inventory driven in the eighties.

According to TOILETS, these splits explain partly by efforts of protection of kind in RDC in Congo and abundance of food. But it is undoubtedly the quality of inventory, difficult to drive in these insulated regions, that could justify the increase of population of these gorillas. In the region of Ndoki-Likouala, a population of 6000 big monkeys was discovered during the operations of count driven by TOILETS and the Congolese government.

The bad news in all that, it is that the majority of the gorillas of the Western plains domicile except the protected natural aeries. It is therefore displayed to the guns of the hunters. Besides, his habitat is visited by the virus Ebola, as bloody for the big monkeys as it is it for the man. That its population roughly doubles because of difficulties of inventory change nothing in tendency. For lack of being better protected, the gorilla of the Western plains is dedicated to disappear, as his Eastern neighbours and of mountains.

(1) The gorilla of the Western plains, or Gorilla gorilla gorilla, is one of four subspecies of gorilla.
